Dear Father and Mother, I take this opportunity of writing you a few lines to let you know how I am gettin' on. These few lines leave me well and hardy at this time and hope these few lines will find you and family (well) when they come to hand. I received a letter from you a few minutes ago and was glad to hear from you. I got a letter from you the other day that stated that you had sent me some clothing but I never had got them. They may have come down this evening on the boat. I have not been downtown to see. The Captain has gone home and he said that he would go to the express office and see if they were there and if they was he would send them on to me. I have nothing of importance to write to you at this time. We have had no fighting at this time only skirmishing some time down at Bethel Church. I hope the war will come to a close after a while. I want you to write how you are a'gettin' on throughout the world and how the times is in that part of the country and all the good news you can gather. I got a letter from Mary the other day and I was somewhat glad to hear from her and to hear that she was up and about. I have drawn 40 dollars of my wages. I shall start home in a short time and I want you to write as soon as this comes to hand and let me know how to find where you live and how to find you. I shall start about the second Monday in March. I shall come by the way of Willmoting (?) on to Augusta, Georgia, on to Montgomery, on to Evergreen. Write soon as this comes to hand. So nothing more at present, so fare well for this time.
