   Dear  Father,

I seat myself this morning to drop you a few lines to let you know that I am well at this time (and) hoping these few lines may find you the same. I received your letter dated the third of August. I was more than glad to hear from you all. I am doing very well at this time. The cause of me not writing to you was (that) we had to march up here and  I did not have the opportunity of writing. You wrote (me) to let you know whether I needed any clothing or not. I need a shirt now at this time. That is all I need now at this time. I may need more after a while. I want you to come down here and see me and bring me a shirt. We are stationed at Bethel Church, three miles above Pollard in Conecuh County Alabama, 8 miles from the Florida line.  We are five miles below Benton. So I will close by saying to you to come to see me and fetch me the shirt.

I  Remain Your Sincere Son Until Death
