   Dear Father,

I take the opportunity of writing you a few lines to let you know that I am well and I hope that these few lines may come safe to hand and find you all enjoying the same blessings of life.  I received your kind letter last night and it gives me great satisfaction to hear that you was all well.  We have won a great victory at Chancellorsville, Va.  The telegraph dispatches at front report General Johnson has fell back 20 miles from Jackson.  I have not got anymore to write to you that will interest you, only I want you to write to me often as you can.  No more at present only I remain

        Your Affectionate Son Until Death
