Dear Friend,
I seat myself to let you know that I am yet alive and I hope when these lines come to hand (they) may find (you) well and hearty. I have nothing much to write at (this) time. Hard times and I am afraid We've (more) coming for there is a call for sixty more men out of this county and we hant heard from Brother William and James since the 29th of April. We don't know where they are. I am in deep trouble about them. I am afraid they are dead but I hope not. Martha, if I could see you I would tell you more than I would write in a week. I could tell you something that would make you laugh every time you would think of it. I want you to write to me for I can't write to do no good. I have got the trembles and I want you to write me all the news you have about the War. Martha, I hant nothing more at this time only I want to see you mighty bad. I hear Mr. James Riley is dead. He (died) at Montgomery. Well Martha, I must quit for I can't write no how. Write Soon to Martha Ann Harrison
from Rhoda Ann Harden
