   Dear Wife,

I seat myself this beautiful Sabbath evening to write you a few lines which will inform you that I am well and hearty at this time, hoping that these lines may come safe to hand and find you and the children all enjoying the same blessings of God.  I have nothing to write to you that would interest you.  Times are pretty hard here at this time and there are some talk of our going to Bragg's (General Braxton Bragg) army in a few weeks but I am in hopes that we will stay here.

I have not received but one letter from you since you left here and I wrote to you to have me some potatos at Evergreen last Thursday, that Nabors has gone home on a furlough and (I) instructed him to call at Evergreen as he came back and see if they was there.  He got back last night and said there was nothing there for me and he not getting them and not getting no letter from you makes me uneasy for fear that some of you are sick or something is the matter.  Write as soon as you get this and let me know how you are getting on for I am always glad to hear from home and to hear from all my friends.  Tell Brother Hendrix to write to me when he can and let me know how he is getting on.  Nothing more at present only I Remain Your Affectionate Husband Until Death.  Give my best respects to all inquiring friends and keep a double portion to yourself.

   Yours Truly

   John. C. Harrison
